Murals

Mural projects demonstrate the arts positive benefits, toward the revitalization of inner-city and neighbourhood renewal areas. Mural projects successfully brings together, community advocacy groups, neighbourhood youth, and professional artists for discussions and collaborations on the mural’s theme and project planning.

Wall murals are a creative and fun way to liven up cold, bare walls, indoor or outdoor.
Despite the fact that cave men possibly used wall drawings for communication, nowadays people use wall paintings for decoration and expression.
What better way to enchant an outdoor area or room, than to have colourful walls, full of your favourite characters and scenes.
The benefits of a mural are :
  • Boosts your childs and communities imagination and creativity
  • Teaches, shapes and colors
  • Has a calming and suitable effect
  • Nourishes and teaches affection
  • Brightens the room or outdoor area and promotes a happy and playful mood
  • It is customized to the individuals needs
  • A mural brings a gift of fun, love and calming to any environment

Obviously, the proud display of a creative, artistic wall mural is a conversation starter (to say the least.)  Another benefit of having a wall mural, no matter where  you place it, is that you are giving yourself a chance to really express your individuality.

The most prominent and obvious benefit of a wall mural is the fact that, every single day, it is a mood enhancing artwork, that stands out at you, promoting a positive mental attitude.

Peter Pan Mural Project

This project was a private commission for a mother, who was looking for a PeterPan mural for her young sond bedroom. After consulting with both parents on the image, I was given the go ahead to start work on the mural, I started off by white washing and priming the wall, for the acrylic mural, I executed a detailed pencil drawing onto the wall, to the correct scale and proportion. This took 8 hours to complete.

Like most of my paintings or murals, I always start by blocking in a basic colour and then I develop and fine tune the colour to meet the requirements of the project, once I am totally satisfied, I start to add all the detail, which is the most time consuming part of the process.

In total I spent 4 days working on the mural and successfully completed the project, within the time frame requested by my clients. The image measured 48in x 144in and looked stunning when completed.

The parents of their child, have since informed me that he adores the mural and subsequently has extended the Peter Pan theme throughout his bedroom, from curtains, lamp shade, duvet-pillows to a Peter Pan rug.

I am currently available to work on a wide range of commissioned bedroom murals, ranging in themes from Disney, Warner Brothers, Superheroes, Manga, to wildlife – underwater themes.

Linenhall  Indoor / Outdoor Mural Projects

I have worked with Greater Linenhall Community Association on two occasions. My first project was over the Easter period of 2012 and the summer period of 2012.

The first mural was an outdoor mural which took 6 weeks to complete, more than was anticipated, due to inclement weather conditions. It was initially time scaled for 5 days but with continued rain, the project stopped and started so many times, it finally took 6 weeks to complete. This was a very testing time for myself, community leaders and the kids from Greater Linenhall.but we finally completed the project.

The mural was inspired by a fantasy theme incorporating large butterflies, flowers, dragonflies and flying pixies in a dreamlike, landscape-seascape.

The mural measuring 60in x 255in was whitewashed for the initial drawing and application of acrylic paint.

Again the colours were blocked in and refined to meet the specifications of the design. After all detail had been completed, the wall was embellished with irridescant marbles to make the stars twinkle and add to the overall concept. The wall was then sealed with an outdoor protective varnish, to protect from weather conditions throughout the year.

The children who worked on the project took great pride in working alongside me and bonded together as a team, delegating and contributing ideas to enhance the final appearance of the mural. I think the bottom 6 photos confirm the committment and vision from all who participated in the project.

What a great team to work with

The second mural was an indoor mural, the idea for this image was based on the history of Linenhall Square from the past, to the present, to future aspirations of the youth for the community.

So we set out to collect lots of different images that could be incorporated into a piece of art, telling the story, of the history of the area, to local characters and family life, through to current residents and achievements, to what the youth would like to achieve and aspire to, for the community and for the future.

So with a limited buget to complete the project, we went to a local wood merchant, who kindly donated a panel for the project. The panel was primed for drawing and colour.

This time, I decided, I wanted to include more mixed media, into the project. So we worked with acrylic paint, collage, mirrored glass and Italian ceramic tiles.

I drafted up the initial drawing and decided on what section of the mural, would have, acrylic paint, collage or glass mosaic – tile mosaic.

Again, teamwork, committment, attention to detail and pride in the project, had exceeded not only my expectations but that of the community leaders and workers.

We also included family portraits, community figures, from the past, to the present and created detailed handpainted street scenes, of what life was like, how people lived and occupied their time. Through to the present achievements, the community has been recognised for and the vision the youth would like to adhere to, for the future.

So with a mix of colour, paint, visual information, hidden messages, mosaic embellishment and extensive collage, we were very successful in completing this, visual work of art, of the local area and history.

The mural is on permanent display, inside the main entrance to, Greater Linenhall Conmmunity House, Newry.

An awe inspiring project

Linenhall  Indoor Jungle Mural

My most recent project with Linenhall Community Association was working in collaboration with Children In Need and Little Peeps ( Parent & Toddler Group )

The wall space measured 7ft in height by 20ft in length. I was given complete control over the subject matter, characters, composition and colour.

The mural was completed over a 6 week period at Linenhall Community Association, I worked solely on the project, with acrylic paint and permanent inks to achieve a graphic / animation effect.

A very rewarding experience

Daisy Hill Hospital A&E – Children,s Resuscitation Unit ( Art Project )

I completed this art project over a 4 month period ( April – August 2014 )

In recent years an investment of a total of £1.5 million has taken place, upgrading the Emergency Department at Daisy Hill, including new waiting, treatment and resuscitation areas specifically for children and young people.

“The new wall art is a great addition to the new child friendly facilities, with parents reporting how it provides a really lovely distraction to their children during treatment.

I extend my thanks to the Friends of Daisy Hill Hospital for their continued support in funding those extra comforts which help improve the patient experience and I take great pleasure in sharing my imagination and talent to the benefit of children and young people who need emergency care.”

The mural includes popular children’s characters along with images of butterflies: “My aim through this project is to make the patient feel calm and reassured. I have tried to promote a tranquil place of rest and recovery through the metaphor of butterflies as they travel around the room healing the patient and using different colours to evoke feelings of strength, positivity and relaxation.”

I used artists acrylic paints and Dulux paints.

I completed 5 murals in total.

This project was a very humbling experience for me, the support, encouragement and praise I received from general hospital staff, to medical and administrative staff was extremely rewarding.

Daisy Hill Hospital – Paediatric X-ray Unit ( Art Project )

I completed this art project over a 3 month period ( May – August 2015 )

“The new wall art is a great addition to the new child friendly facilities, with parents reporting how it provides a really lovely distraction to their children during treatment.

All characters were painted using a mixture of System 3 Acrylic paint & Cryla Artists Acrylic paint. Splashes and all background designs were painted using Valspar paint.

What was once a grim, institutional paint job is now full of vibrant color. If my design puts one smile on the face of a sick child or parent in distress, then I have made a positive impact.

Painting murals in hospitals is a worthy project and studies have shown that improving the atmosphere in which sick children are examined and confined to does have a positive effect on their well-being and speed of recovery.  Happier surroundings help to lessen the anxiety and stress children experience in examination and treatment rooms in hospitals.
